Child Care: What To Watch Out For

It is important to visit the home or center for at least an hour with children present. Any of the following danger signals should rule out that center or home:

*The caregiver doesn't want you to visit or ask questions about what your child will do during the day.

*The children are not given any guidance for 20 minutes or more.

*The caregiver doesn't respond to the children or looks past them when talking to them.

*The caregiver often sounds angry or tense.

*The caregiver often seems overwhelmed or bored.

* The caregiver is physically rough and abuses the children.

*The caregiver appears messy and the setting itself is sloppy, dirty or unsafe.

Danger signals you may pick up after your child has been in day care for awhile:

*Your child appears unhappy and withdrawn.

*Your child suddenly doesn't seem to be eating or sleeping well.

*Your child doesn't respond warmly to you, to other children, or doesn't play with his/her toys.
